2 December: Alzheimer Europe hosts a European Parliament Lunch Debate on “The future of dementia research in Europe”

European Parliament Brussels (square)On 2 December 2025, Alzheimer Europe held a lunch debate at the European Parliament in Brussels (Belgium), exploring the future of dementia research in Europe. The event was attended by national Alzheimer associations, civil society representatives, industry partners and policymakers, including MEPs. Our hosts were Co-Chairs of the European Alzheimer’s Alliance, Tilly Metz MEP (Luxembourg) and Sirpa Pietikäinen MEP (Finland).

2 December: Photographer Alex Kornhuber wins Alzheimer Europe’s 2025 Anti-Stigma Award

Three winners of 2025 Anti Stigma AwardOn 2 December 2025, at a special award ceremony in Brussels (Belgium), Photographer Alex Kornhuber was announced as the winner of the 2025 Anti-Stigma-Award, for his series of portraits “Keepsake Chronicles”. Huge congratulations to him, and to runners-up Desideria Care e.V. (Germany) for their open-air photo exhibition “Seeing Dementia in a New Light”, and Hungarian photographer Bálint Szajki for his deeply intimate photo essay, “In Sickness and in Health”. Congratulations, also, to all six entries that received “honourable “mentions”.

9 December: Alzheimer Europe report highlights initiatives supporting people with dementia to use transport and access recreational activities

Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2025 coverOn 9 December, Alzheimer Europe launched the Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2025, which highlights programmes and resources relating to transport and access to cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport. These topics are vital components in the lives of people with dementia and their carers, which help them to stay actively engaged in the communities in which they live.

12 December: European Medicines Agency issues negative opinion on blarcamesine for the treatment of early Alzheimer’s disease

The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency has issued a negative opinion on the marketing authorisation application for blarcamesine for the treatment of early Alzheimer’s disease. We hope that the re-examination request lodged by Anavex will provide additional evidence for the CHMP to reconsider its position.
