9 September: WHO Europe holds 1st ever national level dementia policy workshop

For the first time, WHO/Europe has convened a workshop dedicated to promoting and supporting dementia policy and planning at the national level. The event, aimed at galvanising action on the public health response to dementia, was held on 9 and 10 September 2019, in Malta, and was hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of Malta.

10 September: Ursula von der Leyen unveils Commissioners-designate

European CommissionUrsula von der Leyen, President-elect of the European Commission, has announced choices for the next College of Commissioners. Following approval of the nominees of each county by the European Council, Ms von der Leyen met with each individual before allocating their proposed remit within the future Commission.

13 September: Eisai and Biogen halt two Phase III clinical studies

On 13 September, Eisai and Biogen announced the decision to discontinue two Phase III clinical studies based on data safety monitoring board recommendation. The MISSION AD1 and MISSION AD2 Phase III studies were multicentre, placebo-controlled, double-blind and parallel-group trials designed to assess the efficacy and safety of elenbecestat, a BACE inhibitor.

20 September: We present our intercultural dementia care database

Following the publication of its report on “The development of intercultural care and support for people with dementia from minority ethnic groups” in 2018, Alzheimer Europe has now launched an online repository of intercultural care initiatives, aimed at improving the situation of people with dementia and carers from minority ethnic backgrounds.

21 September: New European Alzheimer’s Alliance unveiled

On World Alzheimer's Day, Alzheimer Europe launched the European Alzheimer’s Alliance (EAA) for the 2019-2024 parliamentary term. The EAA is a non-exclusive, multinational and cross-party group that brings together MEPs to support Alzheimer Europe and its members in making dementia a public health priority in Europe.
